"The Gray Chair"

"The Gray Chair"

as written and experienced by: John FRY

I met the gray chair while canvasing potential office furniture with Anastasia one Saturday morning. It was nestled in with a group white chairs. Same chair. Different color.

Not sure AG bought into my ‘love at first sight’ reaction. Jeremy the furniture rep clearly didn’t ... but leaned towards getting it out the door towards not being stuck with one lone gray chair.

It immediately spoke to me. Beyond gorgeous gray, it stood out as a foil to the white chairs. The dark swan in a family of white swans. It couldn’t be left behind because it was gray. The white chairs were stronger because of the lone gray chair.

Moved to not leaving the lone chair behind, it also dawned on me the gray chair resonated with one of my favorite office space features, the gray column. The gray column piercing the conference room window opening would have a conversation with the gray chair.

The gray chair story is, I think, is a metaphor tool reflective of inclusivity. One of our core Nexus values. It's also a quirky and lite hearted notion ... maintaining quirkiness and lite heartedness is healthy.

The gray chair will hopefully remain long after I’ve moved on and reflect elements of legacy. Then everyone can pass on and share the story of ‘the gray chair’.
