Low Country Cottage

This new 'Low Country Cottage' completed an enclave concept which began with an original 'Barndominium' located on the 9 acre parcel purchased by our clients. The 9 acre property is an 'Equestrian' parcel located within the 'Spring Island Community' in Beaufort County, South Carolina. Our clients lived in the Barndominium while the design process unfolded.

Beyond the obvious equestrian context, our clients desired multi-layered connections to the property including harnessing view sheds to various pastors, defining morning/afternoon/evening settings in unique experiences while linking the new residence functionally to the existing Barndominium.

The enclave reflects the sum total of integrating existing and new opportunities while providing new and modestly gracious accommodations. Outdoor living was supported by three separate new porches with direct linkage to the existing second level barndominium porch via a 'viewing walkway'. The residence orientation and plan layout was sensitively crafted to leverage all contextual opportunities including thoughtful attention to the entry drive sequence for realizing the enclave during the winding drive up to the residence. Transitional/modern-esque living patterns are supported by open flowing spaces, lofts and axial features opening the house up to a wide range of views and spatial experiences.
